Lukas opened the bulky envelope and was surprised to see a vividly-illustrated copy of My Life with Lukas slide out. “Dude, this is awesome!” he exclaimed. “You took all of these pictures?” he inquired.
Over the past four years, I have taken thousands of pictures of my new family. I am Noah Whitmore, thirty-five-year old teacher from Topanga, California. Up until four years ago, my career was my life. My students were my life. Some argued that I had no personal life at all. They could be right. I have been described as conformist, introverted, highly sarcastic and determined. I am also an aspiring television writer. I have been working on my pilot script for years, but never fully motivated to actually finish it. My writing always seemed to take a backseat to my “real career.”
Lukas read the dedication aloud, “For the Sun.” He smirked as only he could. “You should have written, ‘to Lukas,’ “ he opined. “You know it’s all about me.” He clearly didn’t get it.
Yes, Lukas with a K. He is a talented soccer player, an aspiring actor and musician, and a bit of a troublemaker. He is the perennial “misunderstood teen” with a heart of gold. I can’t tell you how many times I have been in the principal’s office defending, in one way or the other, some little stunt he pulled. But I remind myself that he is only a teenager with that poorly developed prefrontal cortex. But when your mom passes suddenly and your dad’s career as an “international businessman” takes precedence, how would you expect a teenager to act? He had no choice but to come to Los Angeles and live with me. Thankfully, I have an open heart and an extra room! Lukas is the popular guy on campus and the school yearbook describes him as clever, smart, cynical, laid-back and easy-going. But, in reality, he is just a young man in search of meaning in his life and in search of a family. And he found that family with me on Topanga Canyon Boulevard.
This is the story of my life with Lukas.
